He stands with his back to the city, rifle at his side, moss hanging around him like a curtain drawn against the living. The fog makes the world behind him soft and distant — the brick buildings, the iron fence, the morning traffic — all of it fading into grey while he remains sharp, permanent, unbothered by time.

This is The Hiker, formally known as the Georgia Volunteer — a bronze memorial erected in 1931 to honor the Georgian soldiers who served in the Spanish-American War. Savannah was chosen as its home because the city sent more soldiers per capita to that conflict than any other city in Georgia. Sculpted by Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson, the figure is deliberately unglamorous: not a parade soldier, but a fighting one.

Shot in the fog at the south end of Forsyth Park, this image turns history into silhouette. The statue has stood here through wars, storms, and a century of Savannah mornings. The moss doesn’t care. Neither does he.
