Fallen Beach Tree — South Haven, Michigan

A whole tree, root wad and all, lies where the lake put it. Fog erases the horizon and flattens the water to pewter, leaving the bleached limbs to carry the frame — one branch reaching back toward the surf, the trunk running off to the right along the wet sand. The bluff and its pines barely register through the murk.
