Savannah has always known how to make an entrance. This one — a Greek Revival mansion built in 1903, its curved veranda wrapped in fluted Corinthian columns, its pale facade glowing against a canopy of live oak and Spanish moss — sits directly across from Forsyth Park as if it was placed there to be admired. Which, in a sense, it was.

Designed by architect G.L. Norman for Lawrence McNeil and said to have been conceived to complement the park’s famous fountain, the Metts-McNeil House is the only private estate with a direct face-on view of Forsyth. On the morning this image was made, the azaleas were blooming hard at its feet — magenta against cream and white, the oak branches reaching overhead, the whole scene arranged by some collaboration of history and luck.

Some buildings age into dignity. This one was born with it.
