In 1825, the Marquis de Lafayette stood on this portico and addressed a crowd gathered in the square below. Nearly two centuries later, the building looks much the same — cream stucco, deep green shutters, columns framing an arched entrance, the American flag catching the breeze overhead as live oak branches reach in from the left like a polite intrusion.

Designed in 1819 and widely regarded as the finest example of English Regency architecture in the United States, the Owens-Thomas House is one of Savannah’s crown jewels. It is a building that has outlasted the people who built it, the city that surrounded it in its infancy, and most of the architectural fashions that came after. It remains, simply, excellent.

This image was made on a clear afternoon in early 2026 — sunlight hard on the stucco, shadows clean, the building doing what it has always done: making the case, without any particular effort, for permanence.
